Executive Summary of the Conference

Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences is a Deemed University located in a rural area and is dedicated for need-based quality medical Education and research. The institute also provides health care services to the rural people who basically are underprivileged.

Department of Community Medicine, Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College of Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences - Deemed University, Loni, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India, has organized a " 32nd Annual National Conference of Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (IAPSM) on "Millenium Development Goals for Health (MDGs) - Challenges and approaches in the context to Rural India " from 17-19 February 2005.

The conference was organized in collaboration with Pravara Medical Trust & International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health and cosponsored by World Health Organization ( Country Office), New Delhi, UNICEF ( Health) , New Delhi, United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA) , New Delhi, UNICEF( Nutrition), New Delhi, Program for Appropriate Technology in Health ( PATH) , Hyderabad, E H P -USAID, New Delhi, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) , Govt. Of India, New Delhi, Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi, Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR), New Delhi, Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, New Delhi, Bhabha Atomic Research Center(BARC), Mumbai, Indian National Science Academy(INSA) , New Delhi, BD India Pvt. Dr. Paramita Sudharto , Public Health Administrator , World Health Organization , Country Office, India, formally inaugurated the conference on 17th February 2005 by lighting the lamp and paying rich tribute to Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, the founder of the Pravara Medical Trust . Dr. S C Tiwari, President , Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine, presided over the function. Dr. R. C. Goyal, Organizing Secretary of the conference, welcomed the guest, speakers and participants and presented a brief background & objectives of the conference.

Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Rajnikant Arole Share his views and conceren with participants. Dr. Paramita Sudharto delivered inaugural address on Millennium Development Goals & Health and means to achieve MDGs in India. Dr. S C Tiwari delivered his presidential Address.

Prestigious Dr. Harcharan Singh Oration on " Health Insurance" was delivered by Dr. S C Tiwari, President , Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine and Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. Dr. Paramita Sudharto, Public Health Administrator , World Health Organization , Country Office, India delivered Keynote address on " Millennium Development Goals for Health - Challenges and Approaches - an international and national perspective.

The first day in the afternoon witnessed a plenary session on " MDG for Health" . The key speakers were Dr. K Suresh, PO , UNICEF ( Health ), New Delhi, Dr. Arvind Mathur, NPO, WHO ( Country office) , New Delhi and Dr. N S Deodhar from Pune. Prestigious Dr. Ramadwar oration on "Adolescents Issues and Concerens" was delivered by Dr. P R Deo , UNFPA, Mumbai.

Subsequently four parallel thematic sessions on " Reproductive health, Adolescent Health and Child Health " . The lead speaker were Dr. Arvind Mathur, from WHO , Dr. D D Pandit, Mumbai. An exclusive session on " Integrated Management of Neonatal & Childhood Illnesses" was held. Dr. K Suresh from UNICEF and a field team from Osmanabad ( District Health Officer, Medical Officer, LHVs, ANMs, Anganwadi workers ) shared their experience in implementation of the IMNCI. Poster sessions on above themes were also arranged. A workshop on Evidence Based Medicine / RHL was organized for selected participants specially young professionals to update their knowledge and skills.

In the forenoon session of the second day witnessed a Prestigious Dr. D N Pai oration on "Linking Research to Policy and program - Science, statesmanship and society" delivered by Dr. C S Pandav , Professor, AIIMS, New Delhi. An Exclusive session on " Newer Vaccines and Immunization Program in India" was held and Dr. T Jacob John , and Dr. Raj Kumar, PATH shared their experiences.

Eight Parallel sessions on " Social net, Under- nutrition & Micronutrients , Urban Health , Communicable and Non- Communicable diseases " were held. The key speakers were Dr. Seeta Prabhu, UNDP, New Delhi, Dr. Umesh Kapil, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Bela Shah , ICMR, New Delhi. Four Poster Sessions were arranged on the above themes.

The Afternoon Session started with CME on "Millennium Health Goals- Role & preparedness of Medical Educational Institutions in India" , Symposium on "MDGs and Health of the Urban Poor" and a thematic sessions on " Communicable Diseases, Rural Health and Tribal Health , Elderly Care and Occupational / Agricultural Medicine / Environmental Health ".

CME on "Millennium Health Goals- Role & preparedness of Medical Educational Institutions in India" was chaired by Dr. M G Takawale, Vice- Chancellor, and PIMS-DU. The guest speakers include Dr. I . C. Tiwari , on "MDGs for health - are we prepared?" , Dr. B S. Garg ,MGIMS, Sevagram -on "Accountability of Medical Education Institution", Dr. K Suresh , UNICEF on "Partnership between Medical education Institution and Public Health Care agencies - The need of the hour", Dr. C.S. Pandav, AIIMS, New Delhi on "Human resource & MDGs - Quantity , quality and retention programs" , Dr. Deoki Nandan , Dean, S.N. Medical College, Agra on "The up-scaling of the training at UG & PG level - How to achieve?" and Mr. Sunil Nandraj, NPO, WHO, New Delhi on " Legislation in Health Care Sector".

Symposium of "MDGs and Health of the Urban Poor "Chaired by Dr. R R Shinde, GS Seth Medical College Mumbai and Co-chaired by Dr. Sunil Khaparde , Director, RFWTC, Mumbai. The eminent spealers were Dr. Siddhartha,EHP-USAID, New Delhi on "Present Urban Health Conditions & how far are we from MDGs", Ms. Nandita Kunde Kapadia,Pune on "Community based approaches for improving the health of the urban Slums" , Dr. Neelam Bharadwaj, CEO STAPI Pune on 'Addressing unmet Reproductive & Sexual Health needs of young men in urban slums" and Dr. Sunil Khaparde , Director, RFWTC, Mumbai on " Urban RCH program Of Govt. of India".

The speaker on various thematic sessions include Dr. Ashok Patil , President , IAAMRH, on " WTO, Trade Related Aspect of International Property Rights & Health" , Dr. Hanzal , Hungary on " Health care delivery system in Rural Hungary" , Dr. Shyam Astekar , Nashik on " Rural and Tribal Health in India - An Overview" and Dr. B. S.Garg , MGIMS, Sevagram on " Elderly care and MDGs". The participants presented papers during the poster sessions on various themes.

The third Day started with Symposium on " Health Research for achieving MDGs" The speaker include Dr. Amarjeet Singh, PGI, Chandigarh on "Measuring progress towards MDGs" , Dr. A C mishra, N I V Pune , Role of biomedical research in achieving MDGs and Dr. Sachin Parab , Mumbai on " Role of Alternative Medicine in research." The Symposium was chaired by Dr. B S Garg, MGIMS, Sevagram, and Co-chaired by Dr. M Narayanappa. An exclusive thematic session on " Injection safety " sponsored by BD India Pvt. Ltd. Was organized and guest speaker include Dr. Raj kumar, PATH , Dr. Sanjay Chaturvedi , UCMS, New Delhi and Dr. B K Satish , PATH , Hyderabad.

For the first time at IAPSM conference a session on " Role of Nursing in achieving MDGs for Health" was arranged and chaired by Dr. Janardhan Reddy and Mrs. Baby Goyal , Principal, Training College of Nursing , Loni. The guest speakers were Dr. Arvind Mathur, WHO, New Delhi, on " WHO Strategic directions in Nursing & Midwifery for achievement of MDGs" Mr. T Dileep Kumar, President, Nursing Council of India and Nursing Advisor, Govt. of India, on the main theme "Role of Nursing in achieving MDGs for Health" , Mrs. Mangla Joshi, Sassoon Hospital, Pune on " Community Health Nursing and MDGs" and Prof. Saroj Upasani, JJ Hospital , Mumbai on " Nursing Education and MDGs."

Six parallel sessions on "Health System Development, Health Matrix Network , Alternative Medicine were arranged. The key speakers include Dr. Ravi Duggal, CEHAT, Mumbai on "Decentralization of Health Services" and Dr. P P Doke, Dy DHS , Pune on "Quality and coverage of Health care services."

A special plenary session for presentation of project proposals for Ford Foundation IAPSM Epidemiological Grant was held on 19-2-2005. The jury comprising of Dr. Sanjay Zodpey Prof. Dept of PSM, Govt. Medical College, Nagpur and Dr. Sanjay Chaturvedi University College of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for selection of the projects for the grant. Four proposals were presented during the session -

  1. Comparative impact of two training packages on awareness and practices of high school students regarding first aid for injuries and common illnesses By Dr. Sonu Goel, Senior Resident ( Investigator), Dept Of Community Medicine, PGI, Chandigarh
  2. The status of widows in rural areas of Pondicherry by Dr. K. Devi, Junior Resident, (Investigator ) Dept Of Community Medicine, JIPMER, Pondicherry
  3. Feasibility and effectiveness of peer education strategy for adolescent health education in rural areas of Haryana by Dr. Surya Bali, Senior Resident, (Investigator) , Dept Of Community Medicine, PGI, Chandigarh
  4. Psychiatric morbidities among the survivors of 2004 tsunami- a population based follow up study in Pondicherry by Dr. K. Shankar, Junior Resident,( Investigator) Dept Of Community Medicine, JIPMER, Pondicherry.

More than 600 delegate participated in the conference and nearly 360 scientific papers were presented on different themes as oral and posters apart from the keynote address, prestigious orations, Symposia, CME and Special thematic sessions during a three day conference.

The conference was concluded with Honorable Shri Dipilraoji Walase Patil, Minister for Energy and Medical Education , Govt. of Maharashtra, Mumbai, delivering the valedictory address and guidance by Honorable Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, Chancellor, PIMS-DU, and Ex. Union Minister for Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises , Govt. of India, New Delhi.

Dr. Ashok Patil, President, IAAMRH, Dr. S C Tiwari, President, IAPSM , Dr. M G Takawale, Vice-Chancellor , PIMS-DU, Shri Rajendra Vikhe Patil, Trustee and Secretary, Pravara Medical Trust, Dr. A G Kulkarni, Principal , Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College, Dr. S P Zodpey were also presented on this occasion. The conference ended with vote of thanks by Dr. R. C. Goyal , Organizing Secretary , 32nd Annual National Conference of IAPSM and 12th Annual Conference of MCIAPSM.
