Periodontology Department

Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes, such as dental implants. The specialty also concerns itself with the maintenance of health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues.

The Department of Periodontology at the Rural Dental College, Loni offers a graduate and three-year postgraduate program leading to a master of Dental Surgey degree awarded by the Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Deemed University, Loni. The advance training program in periodontics is approved and accredited by the Dental Council of India.

The Section of Periodontics has a wide range of activities covering all aspects of Periodontics, bone regeneration and surgical implant procedures. Research is a core activity of the section with many contributions that have developed in platelet Rich Plasma, Biochemistry of Gingival Crevicular Fluid, advanced diagnostic aids and surgical techniques for bone regeneration around teeth, alveolar bone and dental implants. As well as there are ongoing research projects focusd on the role of bacteria in the development of periodontal disease and studies in the Epidemiology, Immunology and Systemic diseases involvement in periodontal disease.

To foster the development of dentists who will bring profound integrity and ethical character to every endeavor, while demonstrating the highest quality clinical knowledge and expertise.

The students should achieve academic excellence, provide the best oral health care, and engage in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors to improve the health of the highly diverse populations in India.

Goals of the Department : 1. The goal of the Periodontics Program is to provide a basic and advanced education in Periodontics for an improved understanding of periodontal diseases and increased skills in its management. 2. To transform the nature of dental education and practice in ways that will dramatically improve the way we serve our students, our patients, and the surrounding community.

Teaching Programs :

The educational programs in Periodontics are extensive with course for dental students. Interns and Post graduate student.

Undergraduate Education in Periodontics for Dental Students :

This program provides lectures, seminars, Clinical experiences and clinical teaching in the last two years of the four year dental curriculum. Students are exposed to a wide range of patients with periodontal problems and all students get extensive clinical experience in non surgical and observation and assistance in surgical periodontal procedures.

Clinical practice is limited to observation and assistance at pre surgical and surgical procedures. Those interested in research will be able to collaborate in some of the ongoing research project in the section of Periodontics.

Postgraduate Residency Program in Periodontics

The goal of the periodontics residency program is to provide advanced education in Periodontology to highly qualified graduate dentists who are interested in a career or specialized practice, teaching and research.

The program requires a minimum of three (3) academic years for completion. A high level of advanced clinical skills and completion of a curriculum broadly representative of basic and applied science is required. Original research and a dissertation in any of number of related fields are required and may be undertaken on problems relevant to Periodontics. The principles of scientific research design and evaluation are emphasized.

The program devotes a considerable portion of time, to advanced basic science courses specially organized to serve as a prerequisite to the thorough understanding of the clinical problems in Periodontics. In the clinical area the student is exposed to different therapautic philosophies through independent study, demonstrations, and practice.

A series of seminars and lecture courses are available in each quarter. The student can discuss with the program director his/her interest and needs and an effort will be made to tailor the program to meet such needs.

Dental Hygiene Program :

Dental Hygienist program prepares the students for careers in dental hygiene. The mission of the Dental Hygiene Program is to partner with students to achieve academic excellence, promote scholarly activity and research, participate in community service, and offer comprehensive client care, utilizing critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making skills.

As goals, the program will prepare a competent dental hygienist, maintain a contemporary dental hygiene program that reflects relevant and current dental hygiene practice, and provide an interdisciplinary integrated curriculum. The Dental Hygiene Program is fully accredited by the Dental council of India and curriculum is dictated by the Paramedical Board of India.

Dental hygiene students are educated for a challenging career in a growth profession dedicated to the prevention and detection of most diseases of the mouth and related to the body. Most Dental Hygienist find careers in dental offices, clinics, and hospitals.
